Bolted flange gasket technology continually evolves with new designs and materials that provide more reliable and durable seals. Plant operators can choose from a wide variety of gasket products that meet the needs of each application; however, selecting the optimal gasket product is only half the battle.

Controlling the load is essential to ensuring the gasketed joint will seal properly. Previous Sealing Sense articles have examined the types of gaskets to use, how flange finish affects gasket sealing and major pitfalls to avoid to properly assemble a gasketed joint. However, regardless of the type of gasket, controlling the load is probably the most important criteria for getting a gasketed joint to seal. A big problem is the load on the gasket cannot be measured directly and easily during installation.
Palmyra, N.Y., October 2, 2008 -- Garlock Sealing Technologies has completed construction of a facility for the production of its GYLON® restructured PTFE industrial gasketing products. The new facility, which also will serve to consolidate all shipping and receiving activity for the company's Palmyra operations, will meet global demand for its GYLON products with the potential for significant expansion.

New York State Gas and Electric Corporation (NYSEG) has awarded Garlock Sealing Technologies a $362,000 grant to fund a portion of the company's Palmyra modernization project, which includes a recently completed, 51,000-sq ft plant for production of its GYLON PTFE gasket materials. A state-of-the art example of energy efficiency and resource conservation, the new building marks the second major milestone in the five-year, $35 million project.
