What is the difference between a variable frequency drive and a variable speed drive? Are they essentially the same things with different names?

A VFD is an ac drive that controls the speed of a pump by changing the frequency of ac power which is normally 60 hz in the US. A VSD can be electric, mechanical or hydraulic. So, a VSD can be a VFD, but it can also be a dc drive that uses voltage change to control speed or it can be mechanical that uses gearing, variable pitch (belts & pulleys) or a traction drive. There are several types of hydraulic adjustable speed drives available also.
