Boiler and Pressure Vessel code contains rules for the design and construction of unfired pressure vessels. The design of bolted flanges requires that gasket constants referred to as m and y be used in the calculation.
Although many of the energy costs of a shut-down can be difficult to quantify, they are numerous and substantial. Maintaining a process stream in operation increases its overall efficiency, while failures decrease it.
The oil and gas market has remained remarkably stable recently, bolstered by the high price of oil and strong worldwide demand. With refining capacity finite and political unrest in major oil producing countries such as Venezuela, Angola and Iran, the price may rise even higher.
Proper safety precautions for selecting, installing and maintaining seal systems
Changes in the pump media, pressure, temperature and even the decision to opt for longer pump maintenance cycles can all affect pump performance. In these cases, physical changes to the pump's elastomer seals can be used as a diagnostic tool to provide early warning of problems.

What are the key steps to cutting packing for optimum performance?

This month's “Sealing Sense” was prepared by FSA Member Ron Frisard and sponsored by the Compression Packing division.

In 1933, 36 American and Canadian companies attended the inaugural meeting of the Mechanical Packing Association in New York. After changing its name to the Fluid Sealing Association (FSA) in 1970, the organization has grown to represent more than 85 percent of the manufacturing capacity for North America.
Two imperatives for many of today's industrial plants are to reduce the cost of operations through the enhancement of rotating equipment reliability and enhanced energy efficiency of pumping systems.
When seal designs are applied to abrasive slurry applications that properly address the five design considerations noted above, mechanical seals can provide very reliable sealing performance.
The conformability, flexibility and wide range of material combinations and designs enable packing to seal many difficult, unconventional applications. These capabilities, coupled with other packing systems components, can provide effective sealing solutions that reduce the consumption of valuable water and energy resources.
